Origin of carols

Carols were originally pagan songs sung in Europe many centuries ago. Back then these songs were written and sung all year round.
In winters of the past, carols were not sung during Christmas, but at the Winter Solstice celebrations.
The Winter Solstice is the longest night and the shortest day of the year, usually taking place on December 22nd.
At these celebrations, people performed a circle dance while singing carols, which later became a Christmas tradition.
