It was tremendously sad to hear that Giya Kancheli passed away today, October 2nd, 2019. Our deepest condolences go out to Mr. Kancheli’s family. The world will miss the presence of the truly great person he was.
Giya Kancheli, Georgia's most distinguished composer and a leading figure in the world of contemporary music, was born in Tbilisi on 10 August 1935.
Kancheli has written seven symphonies, and what he terms a liturgy for viola and orchestra, called Mourned by the Wind. He composed an opera Music for the Living, and wrote music for films such as Georgiy Daneliya's science fiction film Kin-dza-dza! (1986) and its 2013 animated remake.
The maestro died after a serious illness in one of Tbilisi clinics, he was 84 years old. Despite health problems, he continued to work actively until the last days of his life.
